Last week, we decided we were in need of a nice looking workbench to assemble our magnetic preload system on. When we started thinking of creative ways we could use what he had around the shop to make something cool an idea clicked. What we came up with was a table made of recycled materials, it is 10x stronger than concrete, it won’t crack, and it will hold up a lot better than any ordinary wooden table top. Continue reading to learn how easy it is to make an epoxy top workbench that will add an awesome addition to your home, garage, or shop!

STEP 1: Gather multiple 2 x 4’s and screw them into a frame. Once you have the pieces screwed together, sand the wood down to a smooth finish with 40-grit sand paper.

Step 2: Apply a coat of Cabosil Epoxy Thickener followed by a coat of Thermal-Chem Armorprime 726 Epoxy Primer. This will prepare the table-top for the Epoxy coating.

Step 3: Before you apply your metallic epoxy coat, sand the surface is smooth again with 40 grit sandpaper. The metallic epoxy is applied using a magic trowel and left to self level. (Thermal-Chem 787 DecoEssence Epoxy)

Step 4: After letting the material sit for 24 hours, lightly sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper to smooth out any imperfections. After sanding, wipe the surface down with acetone and set your logo down in the middle of the table.

Step 5: Once your logo is down on the surface, carefully coat inside the stencil with a 1-inch brush. After the logo is all coated, pull the stencil up to avoid any bleed through.

STEP 6: After your logo is dry you want to apply a urethane top coat to protect the surface. For this project, we used Thermal-Chem DecoFinish 1061 Gloss Urethane. This final process is applied with a 3/8 inch roller nap and directionally rolled to make sure the product is uniform.
