Runyon Slurry Removal

Concrete slurry management is a critical aspect of modern construction and renovation projects. The rise of environmental consciousness and stringent regulations has spotlighted the proper handling and disposal of concrete slurry.

This article covers the various aspects of concrete slurry management, offering insights into its environmental impacts, regulatory compliance, and innovative disposal methods.

Construction professionals can significantly mitigate environmental hazards and contribute to a more sustainable construction industry by understanding the nuances of slurry removal and employing effective strategies.

First, let’s explore the essence and risks associated with concrete slurry, a material central to modern construction practices.

What Is Concrete Slurry?

Slurry is a harmful liquid often resulting from wet polishing concrete surfaces with abrasive tools. Due to its chemical makeup, slurry is classified as hazardous waste.

While more than a simple nuisance, slurry is still dangerous to the surrounding environment if not properly disposed of.

Why Slurry Management Matters

Why all the anxiety over disposing of concrete mud?

Besides avoiding hefty EPA fines, using outdated methods to dispose of slurry can be costly. Toxic materials such as glues, oils, mastic, fertilizers, and solvents can be present in the concrete substrate you prep.

Working wet protects crews from breathing these carcinogens but does not eliminate them. Toxins leach into our oceans, rivers, and water tables.

Letting slurry dry without removing contaminants allows it to become airborne sediment. This residual dust clogs our waterways, causing yearly $16 billion in damage.

Slurry Removal Is Part of the Job

Effective slurry disposal should be integral to project planning, not an afterthought. Incorporate it into your job plans from the start. Research different methods to eliminate concrete mud and decide what works for your company, crew and budget.

Regulatory Compliance and Safety Measures

Adherence to EPA, state, and local regulations is crucial in slurry management. Steps include substrate inspection, contaminant testing, and pH balance maintenance.

Additionally, plan for unexpected spills to prevent environmental harm.

Concrete Slurry Removal

Slurry removal involves separating water from cement particles.

You cannot legally dispose of slurry in a dumpster or sewer, making it especially difficult to deal with large amounts of slurry from covering extensive surface areas with a floor grinder or power trowel.

Instead, you must first work to separate slurry back into its two primary components: water and cement. Techniques like SlurrySep facilitate this process, creating a safer disposal method.

Runyon Surface Prep’s Slurry Processing System

Our method for slurry management uses innovative products from Slurry Solutions to facilitate the handling of concrete slurry.

Adding the MudDog SlurrySep flocculant causes particles to clump together and settle to the bottom of the mixing bag. This treated wastewater is then filtered through a dewatering slurry bag, after which you can pump out the treated water.

SlurryDry is a polymer that coagulates the liquid into a dry solid when added to the remaining slurry. The resulting solid matter can now be safely disposed of in a landfill without contaminating groundwater.

Use Slurry Destroyer to aid in the clean-up and removal of concrete slurry from equipment. It turns hardened sludge into a soft substance for quicker removal.

Ways to Effectively Manage Slurry Disposal

Managing slurry encompasses its entire lifecycle, from collection to disposal. Best slurry handling practices involve carefully mixing treatment solutions and ensuring liquid disposal complies with environmental guidelines.

  • Review your slurry management and disposal plan early
  • Understand the EPA regulations as well as state and local laws
  • Inspect the original substrate for possible toxins
  • Determine how to collect and store slurry
  • Test the substrate for contaminants
  • Conduct periodic pH tests
  • Plan for accidental leaks or spills
  • Dispose of the slurry while adhering to EPA/state/local guidelines

Essential Equipment and Products for Slurry Management

Safe and effective removal requires breaking down the slurry into cement and water. The process involves recycling the separated clean water back onto the floor, reducing overall water usage.

Following local regulations, the dried residual slurry must then be condensed into a solid for appropriate disposal.

For this process, you’ll need the following tools:

  • Mixing tote or dumpster
  • Slurry bag tote
  • Dewatering slurry bags
  • Trash pump with 2” discharge hose
  • Clean water sump pump
  • 100’ garden hose
  • 100’ extension cord with splitter
  • Soaking pan
  • Wet vacuum cleaner

Slurry Management While Power Trowel Polishing

Power trowel polishing produces a considerable amount of slurry. There is no single right way to capture and remove slurry. The correct process will depend on the job’s specifics, your available budget, and what is most convenient and effective for you and your team.

That being said, evaluating and taking cues from processes that we’ve seen succeed can be helpful.

  1. Transfer slurry from the auto scrubber into a mixing tote.
  2. Introduce 1 cup of SlurrySep to capture cement particles.
  3. Agitate the mixture using an air compressor or paddle mixer until flocculation is observed.
  4. Use a sump pump to transfer the mixture into a second tote with a slurry bag, allowing water extraction.
  5. After water removal, add SlurryDry to solidify the remaining slurry.
  6. Reuse the extracted water, minimizing the project’s water footprint.
  7. Dispose of the solidified slurry in compliance with local guidelines.

Case Study: Streamlined Slurry Management in Warehouse Polishing

This case study highlights the implementation of innovative slurry management in a large-scale warehouse project, showcasing the integration of advanced technology and environmentally responsible practices.

Project Overview

The project focused on a 30,000-square-foot warehouse, where we employed Runyon’s MPS Magnetic Preload System in conjunction with ride-on trowel polishing technology. This combination not only enhanced productivity but also managed to achieve exceptionally high production rates.

Slurry Collection and Initial Processing

A floor scrubber was utilized to collect the slurry for effective management. It was then deposited into a specially designed low-profile slurry containment tray, facilitating easy and efficient unloading.

Use of SlurrySep for Particle Aggregation

In treating the slurry, we added one cup of SlurrySep to the collected material and mixed it using a trash pump, activating the flocculant. We continued the mixing process until the particles within the slurry reached the appropriate size for the subsequent separation stage.

Separation and Water Reuse with the Big Dog Slurry Bin

Upon reaching the desired particle size, the slurry was transferred to the Big Dog Slurry Bin. This bin was equipped with a dewatering filter bag, effectively separating the solid particles from the water. As the clean water filtered through, it was pumped back onto the floor from outside the bag for reuse.

Remarkable Water Conservation Achievements

This method dramatically reduced the water usage in the project. To illustrate, we managed to cover 6000 square feet with just 300 gallons of water, highlighting our commitment to sustainability and efficient resource use.

Optional Solidification and Disposal

In scenarios where immediate solidification is preferred, the process is flexible to adapt. Post-separation slurry can be directly solidified and prepared for safe disposal, adhering to environmental guidelines.

Outcome and Efficiency

This case study demonstrates a practical and eco-friendly approach to managing concrete slurry and emphasizes the efficiency of combining modern polishing technology with innovative slurry management solutions. The project is a testament to our ability to handle large-scale operations while maintaining an unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility and resource efficiency.
